Did you know that it is possible to replace the over-the-counter medications in your home with natural remedies instead? There are many natural remedies that are more effective than medications, and you have the benefit of avoiding the negative side-effects that are often associated with medications.
If you want to use the most effective natural remedies, then you need to consider the benefits of essential oils. These powerful plant extracts are highly concentrated, making them potent substances that can support the health of your body and knock out a variety of illnesses and diseases. The wonderful thing about essential oils is the fact that they work synergistically with your body, helping the body’s natural functions to fight off the illness or disease.
Getting started with essential oils is easy, and you can build your first aid kit by starting with five basic oils:
Peppermint offers a variety of aromatic benefits that can be beneficial to boost your energy and improve mental clarity at the same time. This oil is an effective remedy to treat digestive problems, such as indigestion, nausea, and acid reflux.
One way that peppermint can be used is to reduce a fever. The oil can be applied to the spine, forehead, neck, and temples to cool the body. It can also be used as a remedy for headaches, respiratory problems, and pain relief.
Lemon has many cleansing properties that can support major functions within your body. If you are looking to boost your metabolism, then lemon is a great option to consider. It is also beneficial to improve the health of your skin, stimulate lymph drainage, and boost energy levels.
Use lemon to improve digestion, get rid of bad breath, relieve colic pain, calm the stomach, boost weight loss efforts, relieve a cough, and whiten your teeth. It has also been found that lemon can help to decrease deposits of cholesterol in the body, which might be beneficial to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Tea tree essential oil, also known as Melaleuca, has antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties that can be very beneficial in a variety of ways. It is a “jack of all trades” essential oil, because it can be used in so many ways. This essential oil is especially beneficial for skin problems, such as rashes, fungal infections, and bacterial infections. It can be used as a topical antiseptic when it is diluted with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil.
Tea tree essential oil helps to speed up the healing of skin infections, soothe sunburns, prevent lice, reduce dandruff, and treat acne. It also is a natural cure for toenail fungus, reduces bad breath, and can be used to clean the bathroom and disinfect surfaces in your home.
Commonly known as the “Swiss Army Knife” of essential oils, lavender can be used in a variety of ways. One of the main benefits of lavender is the soothing effect that it has on the mind and body. It is very relaxing, helping people to overcome mental problems such as insomnia, depression, and anxiety.
Lavender is also very soothing on the skin. It can be applied topically to sunburned skin or rashes, in order to reduce the discomfort and promote faster healing. When it is applied to irritated skin, the person often experiences immediate relief from the pain or itching. It is an effective essential oil to sooth a diaper rash, but it is important to heavily dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil (such as coconut oil) before applying it on your baby’s skin.
As a strong immune-enhancing essential oil, oregano oil is an important tool to have to prevent illness. It supports good respiratory health and it has powerful antibacterial properties that can knock out the strongest of infections.
The high levels of phenols in oregano essential oil help to cleanse the receptor sites within the body. It has antiviral and antifungal properties, making it a great option for a variety of health issues. If you want to disinfect something in your home, then oregano is the bottle to reach for.
One note of caution: oregano is a “hot” oil, which means that it needs to be heavily diluted before applying it to the skin. Use a tablespoon of carrier oil and 1 – 2 drops of essential oil to avoid skin irritation.
Because essential oils are highly concentrated, it is very important that you select a high quality brand in order to avoid the potential dangers of toxins in the oil. Essential oils are not regulated by the FDA, which means that it is up to consumers to do their research and make sure they are using a trusted brand.
There are many companies on the market that sell “essential oils,” which are actually synthetically mimicked to be similar to the oil extracted from the real plant. Diluted, polluted, or synthetic essential oils don’t offer the powerful health benefits that are available from a pure, therapeutic grade essential oil.
Two of my favorite brands are Doterra and Poofy Organics, because they are strict with their testing and research, to ensure the quality of every bottle of essential oil.
